Hi Dave,

I totally appreciate your sentiment, and I hope it doesn't seem like anybody here is on a victory lap since I think that we could all agree that there is very little victory for any of us to have here.

As for the "talking points", from my perspective it often seems like the conservative "talking points" are, as Joe said, objectively false. Take global warming for example (uh oh!). The scientific community (professional climate scientists) overwhelmingly (97-98%) support the idea of man-made climate change. You cannot deny this fact and I find it extraordinarily hard to take anybody seriously who denies both of those facts. From an objective standpoint denying global climate change is tantamount to thinking that the world is flat. Not even two weeks ago Santorum visited my Alma mater and called climate science "political science" and he was incredibly mistaken in doing so. What is distressing to me is that he still got 37+% of the vote in my home state!

This is just one example of falsehoods that should not be tolerated on the right or the left. I am all for arguing about how much government we should have, and I think that I generally agree that we should have as little as possible. However when one group thinks that the sky is green and the other thinks that it is pink we don't just have a minor communication issue, we have a fundamental incongruity that at the moment seems to be unbridgeable.

Personally, all I want is to have people own up to objective reality. What we do after that is up to us but I really cannot stand what is gross ignorance at the best and blatant lying at the worst, no matter what the source.

Jamin;

It's been good to see you back on here recently. I remember a year or so back, we had some pretty good exchanges regarding political philosophy. We even talked about having an Obama-like "Beer Summit" in Madison . I would still be up for that. Although, being conservative, I would fear I may not make it out of downtown Madison. That is the belly of the beast of liberalism in the Midwest. Great towh, just very politically charged to the left.

But, at the risk of sounding like a knuckle-dragging neanderthal (which I know is one of the favorite deragatory terms liberals use for conservatives), I for one don't believe in man-made global warming.

I know the progressive talking points are that "it's proven and undisputable science" and there are thousands of scientists who all say...."Its Real"!! Sorry....I ain't buyin' it! There is nothing happening around me leading me to believe that global warming is occuring. Summers are still hot, and winters are still cold. Tree's still bloom in the spring, and crops still grow. I do think it is more of a political movement than pure science. You could throw a thousand articles at me proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that its exists, and I still am not buying it. I personally think its one more thing the left wants to do to have more control and power over the population....ie...higher taxes on fossil fuels, mandates as to what types of cars we can drive, etc, etc.

Now, I do believe the earths climate does go through much longer term heating and cooling cycles. How else do you explain the fact that the earth used to have glaciers on it that melted millions of years ago. How do you explain that?? There weren't billions of people on the earth back then all driving cars and trucks and emitting pollutants. So, why did they melt then. I know you are going to tell me that the polar ice caps are all melting. Been hearing that for years. Why is it different now than two million years ago (or whenever glaciers covered the earth in case it wasn't exactly two million years ago)?? Do you think we could be just going through those natural cycles, and people are mistaking it for man made global warming?

A caller to Rush today said that democrats were more intelligent, Rush was quick to say I think you mean more educated?(As if thats a bad thing!)

They were discussing birth control and the amount of sex that a gal was having that she needed $3000 worth of "birth control" due to the amount of sex she was having. He said she was basically a prostitute and wanted to be paid for having all this sex.

Here's a copy of her testimony, read it and decide for yourself, read all of it first though.

Many times people don't understand that Rush is just an entertainer, and can be bombastic in what he says. He does that to get a reaction. I have followed this story pretty closely. As far as I am concerned, the Georgetown Law student who pays ~$45,000 + for her education can have all the sex she wants.

The real question is.....why should I (or you) have to pay for her contraceptives? This is a key example of our nation becoming more and more dependant on government for everything they need. Why doesn't she just go buy the pill, and go have it???!! This is the type of thing that really worries me about government intrusion in our lives. But, maybe you agree with it.

thanks I read the whole story . what is your point? are you saying that any insurance should pay for any form of birth control for any reason other than polycystic ovarian syndrome or endometriosis or the small percentage of other medical conditions requiring it ?

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the nice comments! I would love to meet up in Madison anytime. I live in the "heart of the beast", but don't worry, this town is not near as liberal as it's reputation might lead some to believe and certainly nothing that a beer or two can't cure. This is a standing invitation of course to all CCF'ers as I know that there are a few of here in/regularly travel through this area.

Even though I am 180 degrees from your views on global warming, I think that I can understand them. I hope I get the chance to talk to you about some of them and I also would love to hear more about your life and experiences. I'm just one (young) man and very interested in what everybody has to say, even if I am in almost total disagreement with it. At the very least we can always fall back on a discussion about boats!

(Changing gears here...) On the contraceptives I think that a good argument could be made that it is about net gain; i.e. people are going to have sex no matter what, it is cheaper for society to pay for birth control than a baby. And personally I don't by the reaction of "Well who says we even need to pay for the baby!" because that is also a reaction divorced from reality IMHO.

Peace!

I think the point of Global warming is this, I cant say yes or no to it, sht, nowadays i question religion,
it cant be good for our surroundings, what we eat, what we breathe, at one time pollution was dumped into the waters we drank and the (3) rivers caught fire, one here in Cleveland, we do have to get away from those thoughts, we do pollute, it will eventually create a problem, i think its a form of evolution....really, if someone proved that there was no such thing as global warming, would you want to go back to what is was like before that theory...it is a good thing to believe in something

So Jamin....if I understand you correctly, you (and I assume liberals in general) not only believe that society should pay for contraceptives because it's cheaper than paying for us to raise others babies??

Well, lets assume that we do pay for the contraceptives. How can we be absolutely sure the woman will remember to take the contraceptive. By extension, should we hire a personal attendant for her as well that would come around once a day and remind her to take the pill, or even put it in her mouth and bring her some water to wash it down? I mean, how can we trust that the woman has enough personal responsibility to even take the pill that we already bought for her?

But, let's assume the personal valet that we paid for doesn't show up one day, and the woman forgets to take her pill that we also paid for, and she ends up getting pregnant....and a baby is born. Should we also be responsible for paying to raise that baby?

Your post seems to indicate that you feel we should pay for contraception, and if a child is born, we should pay for that also. Just trying to understand if I am correct about your position??

Hi Dave,

I would make the argument that most women don't need a personal attendant to help them take their birth control, put on a condom, etc...

We might be talking about different kinds of women though, and that is certainly an issue. And yes, I think that we should pay for contraception AND a baby if that is what it comes to but on the whole I think that there is every reason to believe that there will be fewer babies with lots of contraception around and so it is a net gain to try to head off the babies at the pass, if you will...

I do want to come back to Peter's request for what a self-described Democrat wants out of society (though I do not actually consider myself a Democrat per se...) so here you go!

Personally I would like to see...

Liberty to live as you see fit within good reason,
Healthcare for everybody who needs or wants it,
Education for everybody who needs or wants it,
A sustainable and clean environment,
Safety of your person at home, work, or abroad,
As many people contributing their personal skills to the greater good as possible, and
a civil society that works together for the betterment of mankind.

"Whoa!" you say. "That is a pipe dream!" I'd probably have to agree with you but I'm just old enough to know that and still young enough to believe it is worth fighting for.

Best!

Jamin...I appreciate your candor. And, by the way, I wasn't talking about "questionable" women. I am just talking about your average, upstanding Georgetown law student type of woman:). And, you believe that contraception should be paid for, as well as a child. Well, I do have to admire an honest man. TOTALLY disagree, but, admire the honesty and candor. Your position almost seems socialistic. Okay, very socialistic.

Also, can't disagree with any of your points above, BUT, those are really pretty generic things that everybody would seem to want. Its just a matter of how some of them get paid for...ie...education, healthcare, etc.

What about the key points I posted several posts back? Small government, low taxes, closed borders, etc. I would love to get your take on those issues.

you cant pick and choose, your argument is on the same lines as handing out clean free needles to addicts, an unwanted child is an unwanted child, its a fcn preventive measure just like a needle. and the government should hand out contraceptives at every corner also

If Howard Stern had made the comment it would have been considered funny but because it was Rush, OMG!!! Many planned parenthood facilities provide free contraceptives, but that does nothing for your cause. When the mandated healthcare coverage was challenged some corporations were made exempt, but when the Catholic church wants an exemption it becomes a political football made to make the republicans appear to want to stuff their pro life agenda down everyones throats. Obama's team calculated they could get a rally of womens votes with this issue while the few die hard catholics they would loose would be minimal by comparison.

It is apparent, even here that the democrat liberals can never be wrong and the republican conservatives never right. Anything can be blamed on Bush, or Reagan but dare say something bad about Clinton, or Obama and the name calling starts, and the nonsense of how the republicans are so aginst the common man and how they only care for the rich. The same rich that Obama is courting and pandering to.

Obama wants me to conserve energy, drive a electric car, solar heat my house etc. Everything that is cost prohibitive, yet every day he flies his jet wiith an parade of suburbans and vans and cop cars to give a speech which is televised. If he cared so much about wasting fuel he could do these speeches from the White House saving thousand perday in just the fuel he consumes.

We have the availability of alternatives with coal, and nuclear but he does not want to even mention them. His cronies that benefit from solar and electric are given money like candy to a kid at halloween. Eevn mention cheaper alternatives and the tree huggers cry wolf.

So before you libs run your high fives and victory laps thinking you are smarter and better that the rest of us, just look in the mirror. What you are seeing is ignorance.

Hi Dave,

I am enjoying our conversation very much. I do hope we can meet up sometime.

A couple things to say about your response to my post;

1) I might actually call myself a socialist. But some of that comes from spending a good part of my life in a Scandinavian country and admittedly they certainly don't have everything figured out.

2) As to the goals, yeah they are super vague and I think that most people would agree with them. I guess that I am not too hung up on how we get to these points. My general philosophy is low taxes or high taxes... Whatever... as long as it works. I understand that I will probably have to pay a lot to live in a world like that but right now that doesn't sound so bad (maybe because I don't have much to lose!).

Just so you know Kevin, I know I am wrong pretty often. And I could come up with plenty of reasons to love and hate every president I can think of.

Don't we have something better to do on a Friday night! :)

Well said sir! I was just telling my wife this evening that Obama has created this whole boogey man issue to court women by mandating female contraception for Catholic organizations.

When conservatives protest about govt intrusion in religous matters, now he can look like a hero to women. I mean come on, does anybody really think conservatives are against contraception?? Its not even an issue....until Obama made it one. Obama must be afraid his star isn't as bright as it was in 2008 and he has to start these phone contraversies. Just like how he called the Georgetown law student today and apologized to her for all the fire she has taken. He must now be every woman's hero. That guy is one slick politician.

So Let me help a little. If you don't bleed once a month you should not be able to decide this issue. Also Contraceptives (birth control pills) have other health uses than contraception. Also we are talking about insurance that she paid for not any give away.

Iknow those pesky facts keep getting in the way.

I am not deciding the issue or even trying to, so get over your PMS.

As for birth control, who gets it, what they use them for, and if insurance pays have little to do with the actual issue. If I have to explain it to you, well it is obvious that you will not get it. Not now, not ever.

What is "ho-slts" in English.

If you are referring to Rush, sorry I don't listen to him and you have the ability to change the channel. Last I knew he is on AM radio. I do know he is opinionated and brash so is Rushspeak. He plays to an audience, he is not the evening news. Do you listen to him regularly or are you shocked because it is pc for you to be?

Just being up front. I honestly am not sure exactly where I fall in the political spectrum but it is probably more left than right. Full disclosure I grew up in the Midwest but have spent >25% of the last four years in Iceland. It has definitely changed the way that I see things, and not just politically. But again I want to emphasize that no nation has things figured out so for me it is not even about "If only America were like X things would be grand!" It is more like "If only America could be everything I think that it can be." I bet you (and everybody else that follows these damn political threads!) probably feel the same way and that is why it is good talking with you and everybody else.

Eric, well I don't know if anybody really wants to know that... Truth is I have a hard time getting involved in these debates because it is extraordinarily hard for me to tell somebody I strongly disagree with them without sounding like a pompous windbag (probably my manner of speech/writing style/attitude). I'll save that for when I meet you all in person (maybe Green Lake after all these years?!).

I hope that hearing the speech she gave will help you(whoever) to understand the issue. This is the gal that Rush called a slut and whore.

The republicans would not even allow her to speak to them. Why? what were they afraid of? A clear explanation of the issue???? because she gives a very clear explanation of the problem.

Just another example of what is wrong with the republican party.

Is this REALLY the biggest problem our country faces? If this poor, down-trodden girl can afford to go to Georgetown Law School, why can't she afford the pill? I googled the cost of the pill, and it is $15-50/month according to Planned Parenthood. Give me a break!!!

I take it that the cost of her pills are not the real issue here. Are the real issues pandering to women, and more government intervention in providing free stuff to people at tax-payer expense?!?!

Global warming is a fact to the farmers around here who make thier living off the land (and most are pretty conservative)

Global warming is a fact in the HVAC industry where all the degree day charts have changed in the last 20 years and heat pumps continue to be installed further and further north with every passing year.

Global warming is a fact to those that own ski resorts around here who have all had to continually increase thier snowmaking capabilities while watching thier skiable days trend down for the last 25 years

Global warming seems awefully plausible here in Auburn ny where owasco lake -that froze over completely every year for the first 50 years of my fathers life - has only frozen over completely once in the last 10 years, and was about 50/50 the ten years before that. It didnt freeze a bit this year, not just not fully over.. not a bit, I am sure it will again but the trend is impossible to ignore looking out my front door.

Global warming is a fact to nearly every one of the thousands of people who have dedicated thier life to studying the issue.

I understand that many dont live in places where it is that obvious, I live in an area where the weather is effected hugely by the great lakes. When thier temperature trends up it has major effects on us.

It is awefully hard to discuss whether the cost of addressing the problem is worth the possible benefit when some people refuse to accept the facts.

As for woman in law school being on the pill I am all for it!

Rush is a disgusting creature who doesn’t even believe the crap that he spews to keep his wallet fat and his painkillers flowing, if that was my daughter he would be spewing his nonsense though a wired jaw for a little while.

As for the rest of it… it aint black and white … and it aint worth the effort.

where did it say she wanted free stuff at taxpayer expense?

She and every other woman attending Georgetown PAID for insurance, but the insurance won't cover it. Why won't they cover it? Religious "reasons". This is about womens health/access. I guess you are against that. Did you listen to her? we are not talking about any giveaway--how many times do you need to hear that?

Here is a link to the student health insurance page you can see they PAY for it.
Student paid health plan at georgetown

does that help? do you get the issue? am I wrong?
This is the life
